Description

This project will determine the long-term effects of two modes of aerobic exercise, compared to a no-exercise control group, on the motor, cognitive, and dual-task performance in advanced people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD) with deep brain stimulation. Despite comprising 25-50% of the PD population, no trials have evaluated the effects of exercise on advanced PwPD function. For the first time, this project will determine the global impact of exercise on advanced PwPD while simultaneously recording neural data from the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and cortical regions before, after, and 4 weeks after exercise cessation to understand the mechanism(s) underlying the potential benefits of exercise on PD.
