This award funds research to understand how the SFTA2/ADGRF5 signaling axis regulates alveolar surfactant levels in the lung, aiming to identify therapeutic targets for severe lung diseases related to surfactant dysfunction.

Description

Pulmonary surfactant is essential for gas exchange in the lung and changes in the quantity, composition, or function of surfactant are associated with severe lung diseases in children and adults. Studies proposed in this application will provide insight into the mechanisms by which an orphan G protein-coupled receptor, ADGRF5, and a newly identified putative ligand, SFTA2, regulate the amount of alveolar surfactant in the lung to support breathing. The long-term goal of this work is to identify potential therapeutic targets, including SFTA2 itself, for modulating endogenous surfactant levels in the treatment of severe lung diseases associated with surfactant dysfunction.
