A feasibility study to evaluate alendronate therapy for osteonecrosis in adults with sickle cell disease, focusing on recruitment, retention, safety, efficacy, and biomarker analysis.

Description

This project involves a single-arm 6-month feasibility study of alendronate in a prospective cohort of 24 adults with sickle cell disease-related osteonecrosis of the femoral head. The primary endpoints are recruitment and retention rates, with secondary endpoints including safety, efficacy, medication adherence, opioid use, and surrogate markers. The study also involves collecting serum and urine specimens to analyze bone biomarkers as proxies for adherence and to understand bone pathobiology.
