The project aims to operationalize wastewater-based epidemiology to detect and monitor multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRO). It involves designing wastewater MDRO model systems using plug-flow reactors to study flow parameters such as hydraulic retention time, pH, temperature, and antibiotic pressure. The study will correlate wastewater MDRO data with clinical MDRO data from hospital and community samples, using chromatin-linked metagenomics and long-read sequencing to elucidate phylogenetic links. Different epidemiological models, including linear, nonlinear, and dynamic mathematical models, will be tested to estimate MDRO burden and inform public health strategies.
