Addressing appetitive traits to promote weight management in children who overeat

A research project funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to evaluate a novel intervention targeting appetitive traits in children with overweight or obesity to improve weight management outcomes.

Description

This project tests a novel model called Regulation of Cues (ROC), based on the Behavioral Susceptibility Theory, which targets appetitive traits such as food cue responsiveness (FR) and satiety responsiveness (SR). The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of ROC compared to Family-Based Treatment (FBT), ROC plus nutrition education and caloric restriction, and a health education control over 18 months in a multisite randomized controlled trial involving 280 children with overweight or obesity and high food cue responsiveness. Primary outcomes include changes in child weight and overeating episodes. Secondary outcomes include measures of satiety responsiveness, food cue responsiveness, inhibition, energy intake, and parent outcomes such as weight loss and overeating episodes. The study also explores mediators and moderators of treatment effects. This research could lead to a more durable weight loss program for children with overweight or obesity and high food cue responsiveness, potentially transforming weight-loss treatment paradigms for children.
