Research project funded by the National Eye Institute to study the role of galectin-3 in corneal nerve regeneration and develop therapeutic strategies to improve nerve regeneration and sensation in ocular surface disease.

Description

This project focuses on understanding the inhibitory mechanisms hampering corneal nerve regeneration, with a particular emphasis on the role of galectin-3. The research aims to develop new strategies to promote and preserve corneal nerve density in patients with ocular surface disease. The study hypothesizes that overabundance of galectin-3 promotes degenerative signaling in peripheral sensory neurons and may be a therapeutic target for nerve regeneration.
