This award funds the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center's Office of Community Outreach and Engagement to address cancer health disparities in Los Angeles County through community engagement, research, education, outreach, and policy advocacy focusing on high-burden cancers and health behaviors.
Description
The Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center (NCCC) addresses the cancer-related community health needs for Los Angeles County, where 84% of NCCC patients reside. COE supports NCCC’s mission to reduce the cancer burden through research, education, outreach, and dissemination. Priorities include prostate, breast, lung, liver, colorectal cancers, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia, as well as behavior change areas like obesity, tobacco/vaping, and HPV/cervical cancer prevention. COE's specific aims are to define, assess, and monitor cancer-relevant needs of the catchment area; foster relevant research, education, and outreach; enhance enrollment in cancer research and clinical trials; influence policy and advocacy; and extend reach beyond the catchment area. Achievements include partnerships with 30 community organizations, dissemination of educational materials to 290 organizations, participation in 162 events reaching over 519,782 individuals, engagement of approximately 80,000 individuals via social media, and over 600,000 through Spanish language TV. The project has contributed to multiple grants, developed cancer-specific reports, and influenced public policy on tobacco control.
