The NIH-funded project aims to identify and characterize novel targets for gastrointestinal hormones and neuropeptides in regulating intestinal motility by studying peptide receptor localization and cellular mechanisms in specific interstitial cell populations of the GI muscles.
Description
This project will determine the specific localization of peptide receptors in the regulatory interstitial cell populations of GI muscles and discover how responses mediated by neural and hormonal peptides occur. It explores novel targets for peptides by determining the localization of receptors in specific subtypes of ICC and PDGFRa+ cells in muscles of the small intestine and colon and characterizes the actions of secretin, GLP-2 and CGRP on these cells. The project investigates cellular mechanisms utilized by these peptides using cell-specific, transgenic manipulation and optogenetic, chemogenic and FRET techniques, aiming to provide new ideas for causes of and therapies for GI motor diseases.
