The award funds research to understand the role of the gut microbiome in muscle atrophy following sepsis, aiming to identify new treatment targets through advanced biological techniques.

Description

This project will study how the gut microbiome, the bacteria that live in the human intestinal tract, contributes to muscle atrophy during sepsis, with a goal of identifying new targets for treatment. Research objectives include identifying key bacterial taxa that contribute to or prevent muscle atrophy in murine sepsis models, identifying bacterially-derived metabolites mediating muscle changes, using in vivo and in vitro models with metabolomics and metagenomics techniques, and laying groundwork for future interventions and human translation.
