Research grant awarded to study the role of mitochondrial calcium uniporter in platelet function and thrombosis, aiming to improve stroke outcomes through novel therapeutic targeting.

Description

This project aims to study whether targeting a novel pathway controlling platelet activation, specifically the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU), can reduce thrombosis outcomes and improve neurological function in stroke. It involves determining how MCU regulates platelet activation, procoagulant platelet formation, and platelet-neutrophil interactions; establishing whether targeting MCU in platelets improves ischemic and neurological outcomes in murine stroke models; and investigating if regulators of procoagulant platelet formation, including MCU, are altered in human ischemic stroke and correlate with outcomes.
