The award funds the development and testing of a physical activity intervention using Fitbit devices to reduce prenatal alcohol use among high-risk pregnant women, aiming to prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Description

This project aims to develop a physical activity intervention to help pregnant women at high risk for prenatal alcohol use (PAU) avoid alcohol consumption during pregnancy. The intervention will utilize lifestyle physical activity (LPA) approaches supported by activity monitors like Fitbit, integrated into daily life to serve as an alternative coping strategy for distress and cravings. The study includes a small open pilot trial (N=20) and a pilot randomized group-treatment trial (N=50) comparing LPA+Fitbit to Fitbit only, with assessments through 4 weeks postpartum. The goal is to create a feasible, acceptable, and effective intervention to reduce PAU and lower the risk of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).
