Description
This project aims to develop highly mature bioengineered human heart tissues based on the fact that mature adult cardiomyocytes contain more than one copy of DNA (i.e., they are polyploid). We will construct engineered human heart tissues made of polyploid cardiomyocytes and study their structure, function, genetic and metabolic properties, and response to stress. The outcomes of these studies will enable generation of improved organ-on-chip systems for drug development, studies of human heart disease, and regenerative medicine applications.
