Description
This project investigates mechanisms of immune system activation in the lungs leading to emphysema and airway remodeling in Veterans with COPD. It focuses on mucosal immunity defects, particularly the role of polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) and secretory IgA (SIgA), and their impact on bacterial invasion, inflammation, and immune cell infiltration. The study uses mouse models deficient in pIgR to understand COPD pathology and explores immune cell roles, including T lymphocytes and dendritic cells, in disease progression. The project aims to develop new strategies to limit tissue injury while maintaining host defense and involves extensive immunological and pathological analysis.
