The award funds a project to adapt and pilot a culturally sensitive communication intervention to improve outpatient care for BIPOC individuals with psychosis, aiming to reduce misdiagnosis and improve treatment engagement through enhanced provider communication.
Description
This project aims to improve provider communication with Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals during outpatient assessments, treatment discussions, and care initiation for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. It involves adapting a 3-session intervention, Cultural Formulation Interview-Engagement Aid (CFI-EA), based on DSM-5's Cultural Formulation Interview, to personalize cultural assessments and enhance culturally sensitive provider communication behaviors. The intervention includes standardized assessments of mood symptoms and social determinants of health to reduce misdiagnosis and focus provider attention on socio-structural factors. The study will complete Stage I of the NIH Stage Model of Intervention Development, including adaptation, feasibility, acceptability, and pilot testing of service and patient outcomes in a small randomized controlled trial. The goal is to inform a larger future trial and facilitate immediate use in community clinics to address disparities in care for BIPOC individuals with psychotic disorders.
