Description
The project aims to develop a polymer with combined nitric oxide (NO) releasing and NO generating properties to prevent platelet adhesion, activation, thrombosis, and microbial biofilm formation on blood-contacting devices. This innovative approach mimics vascular endothelial cells and aims to reduce complications associated with extracorporeal circulation, especially in COVID-19 patients. The polymer will incorporate NO donors covalently bonded to prevent leaching, along with immobilized selenocystamine for long-term NO generation. The project will evaluate antimicrobial properties in vitro and thrombosis prevention in a rabbit extracorporeal circulation model, with the goal of progressing to early clinical trials.
