This award funds research to study skeletal muscle health and its impact on impaired glucose tolerance in adolescent and young adult survivors of hematopoietic cell transplantation, aiming to improve understanding and interventions for treatment-related complications.

Description

The study aims to define the trajectory of skeletal muscle health and its association with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) risk in adolescent and young adult hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) survivors, providing a foundation for future tailored interventions. It will assess IGT over time using the 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test and longitudinally evaluate skeletal muscle strength, mass, and performance at pre-HCT, 6 months, and 1 year post-HCT. Blood biomarkers associated with skeletal muscle health post-HCT will be identified, and the relationship between muscle health and IGT will be analyzed.
