Estimating population size and health indicators for people who inject drugs in U.S. cities

This award funds a project to estimate the population size and health indicators of people who inject drugs in 11 large U.S. cities, aiming to improve public health interventions and resource allocation.

Description

Injection is an increasingly common route of substance use in the U.S. and increases risk for overdose, HIV, and hepatitis C infections. However, local estimates for the number and characteristics of people who inject drugs (PWID) have not been updated since 2007, making public health interventions for these populations difficult to plan, implement, and monitor. In collaboration with 11 city health departments, we will extend our team’s hybrid estimator model for PWID population size estimation to create overall and age-specific estimates for injection drug use and related health indicators in 11 large U.S. cities.
