NIH awarded $798,107 to Massachusetts General Hospital for a project led by Amy K. Barczak to study TB-associated lung fibrosis using tissue-based approaches, aiming to develop new treatments.
Description
This project aims to understand how fibrosis and permanent lung damage occur in TB infection, facilitating the development of new anti-tuberculosis treatments to improve quality of life and longevity. It uses mouse models and human tissue biobanks to identify spatial and molecular correlates of fibrogenesis, benchmarks findings between mouse and human specimens, develops algorithms using µCT and AI to quantify fibrosis and identify microanatomic contributors, and builds a mechanistic model for TB-associated fibrosis to test candidate interventions.
