This award funds the University of Michigan's SURP program to provide undergraduate students with research training in physiology, promoting biomedical science careers through hands-on experience and mentoring.

Description

The goal of the renewal R25 program is to continue providing undergraduate students nationwide with research experiences in cardiovascular, pulmonary, or sleep-related physiology at the University of Michigan. The program aims to stimulate career development in biomedical sciences and promote interest in biomedical careers. The Summer Undergraduate Research in Physiology (SURP) program at the University of Michigan, funded by R25HL108842, is extended to train undergraduates for advanced graduate programs or careers in biomedical and clinical research. The program includes 23 faculty mentors from basic science and clinical departments, with a history of training successful students. During 2016-2023, 80 fellowships were awarded to 69 students, with outcomes including pursuit of advanced degrees, research participation, and employment in STEM fields. The program recruits 10 students each summer for a 12-week research experience, including hands-on laboratory work, mentoring meetings, and a mini-symposium. Educational components include a lecture series on physiology, research principles, ethics, and career opportunities.
