This award funds the development and use of animal models, particularly PCD pigs, to study lung diseases and develop better treatments. The project supports investigators with animal models, sample collection, imaging, and scientific expertise to advance understanding of PCD and related respiratory conditions.

Description

The project aims to develop and utilize animal models, specifically PCD pigs, to study lung disease mechanisms and potential treatments. Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the genes that encode cilia structural proteins. The Animal Models Core will provide program investigators with WT and PCD pigs, assist in harvesting biologic samples, provide scientific support for image acquisition and analysis, and help project leaders accomplish their aims.
