Description

This K24 program investigates the mechanisms of use, underuse, and unsafe use of antihypertensive medications to prevent aging-related multimorbidity, including Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias, and cardiovascular disease. It also aims to train the next generation of patient-oriented, aging-related research scientists in hypertension pharmacoepidemiology. The research focuses on geographic variation in healthcare utilization, multimorbidity, and frailty related to antihypertensive medication use, with specific aims including determining the population health impact of intensive blood pressure treatment according to frailty status, analyzing associations among pharmacy density, antihypertensive medication use, and blood pressure control, and comparing cognitive function and white matter lesion volume in users of different antihypertensive drugs. The mentoring plan involves individualized training and extensive mentorship networks.
