Research project funded by NIGMS to study genetic mechanisms of speciation and reproductive barriers in Drosophila species, focusing on molecular pathways and genetic incompatibilities relevant to human disease.

Description

The goal of the proposed research is to elucidate fundamental genetic mechanisms of species diversification and to identify molecular pathways that underlie genetic incompatibilities. The research aims to identify cellular processes impacted by mismatches in genome composition, which can be important in human disease. Understanding the molecular genetic basis of speciation, especially pre-zygotic reproductive barriers, using the Drosophila virilis species subgroup. The project will focus on gametic incompatibilities and hybrid male sterility caused by Y and X chromosome incompatibilities.
