This project focuses on the isolation of a biotin catabolic strain, identification of the catabolic operon, and reconstitution of all enzymes involved in biotin catabolism. Mechanistic and structural studies will be conducted on key enzymes involved in the degradation of the biotin heterocyclic core. The research aims to add fundamental knowledge to the metabolism of biotin, an essential vitamin, and evaluate the role of gut microbiome mediated biotin catabolism in human nutrition.
