Description
Astrocyte dysfunction and immune dysregulation are cardinal features of Alzheimer’s disease, but the biological pathways and temporal course associated with these processes are poorly understood. The goal of this application is to evaluate astroglial-associated immune dysregulation as a potential mechanism for brain microstructural damage and cognitive decline in older adults. Understanding molecular bases of astrocyte-associated immune dysregulation and neuroanatomical and synaptic pathways by which they relate to clinical outcomes is integral to developing accurate neurobiological models that explain why age is the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, accessible blood-based immune biomarker panels that help predict and track early pathological processes in Alzheimer’s disease, and biological, druggable targets for large-scale therapeutic trials.
