Description

The Center for Innovation in Point-of-Care Technologies for HIV/AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases at Northwestern (C-THAN) will serve as a Technology Research and Development Center (TRDC) within the NIBIB Point-of-Care Technologies Research Network (POCTRN). Its mission is to catalyze innovation in diagnostic technologies by fostering multidisciplinary partnerships across technology platforms, clinical, regulatory, and commercialization domains, with a focus on HIV/AIDS and emerging infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The center will comprise four cores: Administrative, Technology, Clinical, and Dissemination, with specialized working groups in molecular, lateral flow, synthetic biology, and product engineering. The Administrative Core will provide leadership, governance, and coordination, led by principal investigators Drs. Chad Achenbach, Robert Murphy, and Sally McFall. Key partner institutions include Northwestern University, University of Cape Town, University of the Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch University, University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, University of Jos, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, USTTB, and UCAD. The center aims to build upon 20 years of infrastructure development and research training in Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, and South Africa.
