Description
Acute respiratory failure (ARF) requiring invasive ventilation occurs in one-third of ICU patients and is associated with high mortality. Ventilation-induced lung injury (VILI) is a modifiable determinant of ARF outcomes caused by excessive stress/strain on the lung. The study aims to understand the contribution of spontaneous breathing effort to VILI, the mechanisms of drive heterogeneity, and its relationship with clinical outcomes. The research involves a prospective cohort study across two hospitals, serially measuring respiratory mechanics and serum biomarkers.
