This award funds research to decipher the mechanisms by which neonatal intestinal immunity is regulated by commensal bacteria and epithelial calprotectin, aiming to improve prevention and treatment of enteric infections in newborns.

Description

Research project to understand how commensal bacteria regulate intestinal calprotectin and host defense in neonates, investigate the impact of epithelial-intrinsic calprotectin on microbiota and lymphocyte subsets during early life, and translate findings to human intestinal organoids to develop new approaches to augment innate intestinal defense in infants.
