A research project evaluating a shared decision making intervention for rheumatoid arthritis in VA settings to improve patient outcomes and reduce disparities through a cluster-randomized trial.

Description

This project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a multi-component shared decision making (SDM) intervention on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity, medication adherence, and patient knowledge. The research will contribute to understanding how to foster SDM across VA rheumatology settings to improve patient outcomes and experience, ultimately aiming to improve health, reduce disability, and eliminate disparities. The study uses a stepped-wedge, cluster-randomized controlled trial across three sites involving Veterans with RA and rheumatology clinicians. The intervention includes clinician training, patient activation prompts, and a decision aid, with outcomes measured over a 42-month period.
