NIH-funded research project by University of Alabama at Birmingham studying congenital CMV infection mechanisms and immune responses to develop strategies to limit neurodevelopmental abnormalities in infants.
Description
This project focuses on intrauterine infection of the developing fetus with human cytomegalovirus (CMV), a leading cause of neurodevelopmental sequelae in infants and children. Using a mouse model that mimics many aspects of CMV infection, including altered brain development, the study aims to develop new insights into the infection and suggest new management approaches. The research will extend to characterize early CNS infection events, the role of antiviral antibodies, innate immune responses, and mechanisms of altered cerebellar development following virus-induced inflammation.
