Research project funded by NHLBI to study the role of erythroblastic island macrophages in sickle cell disease and explore therapeutic strategies to reverse disordered erythropoiesis.
Description
This project investigates how hemolysis, a hallmark of sickle cell disease, inhibits the activity of central macrophages, leading to disordered erythropoiesis, and explores reversal strategies via transfusions or heme scavenger treatments. It focuses on the impact of hemolysis on erythroblastic island macrophages and erythropoiesis, mechanisms involving TLR4/NFkB, EPO/EPOR signaling, PPARγ, and chemokines, and the therapeutic potential of transfusions, hemopexin, and PPARγ agonists.
