Research grant to study the effects of amino acids on auditory neurons, focusing on age-related hearing loss and potential drug targets to improve speech understanding in the elderly.

Description

The proposed studies are designed to better understand how age-related hearing loss negatively impacts acoustic information processing in auditory brain centers. Brain substances/neurotransmitters involved in hearing and attention show age-related changes, but those specifically involved in attention seem resistant to aging. Neurotransmitter systems in the older brain may provide unique receptor targets for the development of drugs designed to ameliorate certain aspects of age-related loss of speech understanding.
