Description

The goal of this project is to define novel transcriptional regulators and place them in a hierarchical network that controls mitochondria dynamics and proinflammatory gene expression in human intestinal stem cells. This has significant implications for how the intestinal epithelium may regulate normal turnover and metabolism as well as to identify mechanisms by which disease may develop, as dysfunctional mitochondria are a common early step in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease. With the high incidence of inflammatory bowel disease and other intestinal diseases across the United States, understanding how major metabolic pathways and inflammatory signals are regulated in the human intestinal epithelium is a pressing public health concern.
