Description

This project investigates the interactive effects of heavy alcohol use and HIV-1 infection on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in people living with HIV (PWH). It focuses on gut-derived inflammation, disturbed tryptophan metabolism, and the resultant increase in inflammatory kynurenine pathway metabolites that may exacerbate CVD. The study leverages two existing cohorts to assess the relationship between alcohol consumption, tryptophan catabolism, immune cell changes, and CVD risk, and evaluates the impact of probiotic administration.
