A Longitudinal EMA Study Examining the Role of Maternal Mood and Physical Symptoms on Women's Cannabis Use Across the Perinatal Period

A 5-year longitudinal study funded by NIDA to investigate cannabis use among pregnant and postpartum women, tracking mood, symptoms, and cravings to inform tailored interventions.

Description

This research aims to elucidate predictors of cannabis use and cessation among pregnant and postpartum women, focusing on the perinatal period. It involves recruiting 200 pregnant women who report regular cannabis use prior to and/or during pregnancy, and following them from the first trimester to 12 weeks postpartum. The study includes ecological momentary assessment (EMA) bursts to track associations between maternal mood, physical symptoms, cannabis use, and cravings. Qualitative interviews will also be conducted to gather feedback on future services and interventions. The goal is to develop tailored support to reduce adverse outcomes associated with cannabis use during the perinatal period.
