Description
Obesity is a worldwide epidemic due in part to increased ‘around-the-clock’ access to high fat foods and feeding at the “wrong time” of day, though the environmental and genetic factors driving weight gain with irregular meal patterns are not very well understood. Restricting the consumption of food high in fat to the “correct” time of day in the wake period blunts the development of obesity independently of calories consumed through a mechanism involving enhanced metabolism of food and the production of heat. The present proposal seeks to understand how the brain communicates with adipose tissue to coordinate metabolism with the environmental light-dark cycle and will provide insight into the health benefits of time-restricted eating.
