A Veterans Affairs funded randomized controlled trial evaluating a mobile app with peer phone support to reduce hazardous drinking among Veterans, aiming to improve engagement and health outcomes.
Description
This project aims to evaluate a mobile app intervention combined with peer support to reduce hazardous drinking among Veterans, leveraging innovative engagement strategies to improve health outcomes. It is a 3-group randomized controlled trial at VA Palo Alto and Syracuse involving 274 Veteran primary care patients with hazardous drinking, not currently in alcohol treatment. The study compares usual care, usual care plus the Stand Down app, and usual care plus peer-supported Stand Down app, with follow-ups at 8, 20, and 32 weeks. The project seeks to expand access to alcohol care for Veterans with low staff burden and transform care delivery for hazardous drinking in primary care.
