This NIH-funded research project investigates whether nitrate supplementation combined with exercise can improve health outcomes in older adults by enhancing cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle quality, and explores underlying biological mechanisms.

Description

Aging-related functional declines are caused by hallmark biological processes that manifest in physical, mental, and metabolic impairments, reducing intrinsic capacity and healthspan. Exercise is a promising multipotent treatment, but individual responses vary significantly. This project aims to enhance exercise responsiveness in older adults by combining endurance and resistance training with nitrate-enriched dietary supplements to improve cellular, tissue, and systemic health benefits.
