BLRD Research Career Scientist Award Application

This award supports research focused on understanding and reducing fracture risk in veterans with chronic kidney disease (CKD), aiming to improve bone health and quality of life.

Description

The veteran population develops chronic kidney disease (CKD) at a higher rate than the general population. Patients with CKD are at an increased risk of fracture and if a fracture occurs, patients with CKD have a greater risk of death compared to other populations. Unfortunately, treatments aimed at reducing fracture risk in CKD patients are limited in part due to the lack of extensive studies. My research program is focused on understanding causes of bone fragility in CKD and working on approaches to minimize fracture risk. Beyond CKD, bone loss from other conditions (such as osteoporosis) affects millions of Veterans and thus our work in CKD has far reaching implications. The results of this work will provide a basis for improving the quality of life of veterans at risk of bone loss and fracture.
