Description

The proposed research aims to develop a novel prebiotic bacteriophage cocktail to target Desulfovibrio spp. in the human gut, reducing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production associated with malodorous flatulence and certain health conditions. The project involves assembling a panel of Desulfovibrio isolates, performing phage hunts, characterizing isolated phages, formulating cocktails, and expanding host range through directed evolution. The project is led by Dr. Justin Boeckman, with mentorship from Dr. Jason Gill and Dr. Neema Mayhugh.
