The award funds research to understand astrocyte-microglia interactions in white matter degeneration and repair, aiming to inform new therapies for CNS injury and neurodegenerative diseases.

Description

This research aims to dissect molecular pathways of astrocyte-microglia interaction that govern pro-restorative CNS innate immune responses to white matter degeneration, focusing on a newly identified mechanism of intercellular communication involving a subpopulation of white matter degeneration-reactive astrocytes. The study will utilize transgenic mouse models, single-nucleus RNA-Sequencing (snRNA-Seq), and snATAC-Seq to analyze astrocyte reactivity and microglia function over time, with the goal of understanding how these interactions shape CNS innate immune responses and facilitate white matter repair.
