Description
Project narrative: Infectious diarrhea and bacteremia remain serious public health concerns in children and immunocompromised adults, but the lack of animal models that accurately resemble the infection observed in these patients have limited our understanding of the disease. We propose the use of novel neonatal and immunodeficient mice to study the pathogenesis and immune response during enteric and systemic infection by Citrobacter rodentium and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. These studies have the potential for a major impact on the design of better strategies to treat these conditions in children and patients with impaired adaptive immunity.
