The award funds research to evaluate the predictive power of the alcohol biomarker PEth for HIV prevention and treatment outcomes, and to develop a point-of-care test for PEth to enable real-time clinical interventions.
Description
This project will leverage existing samples and data from two seminal trials of injectable long-acting vs. oral antiretroviral therapy to evaluate the predictive power of an objective alcohol biomarker (PEth) for clinical outcomes in persons at risk for HIV, and persons with HIV with the highest potential to transmit to others. A point-of-care test will be developed to measure PEth in the clinic, enabling real-time interventions to reduce alcohol consumption and prevent acquiring or transmitting HIV.
