Description

This study uses innovative brain imaging, physiological monitoring, and virtual reality to identify how neural, physiological, and psychological responses to food differ between normal-weight individuals and those with obesity, under both hunger and satiety states. The findings could lead to earlier diagnosis and more personalized treatments for obesity and related eating disorders, ultimately improving health outcomes. The research employs an integrated, multi-modal approach including functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), hormonal and physiological monitoring, and immersive virtual reality environments. The goal is to identify neural and physiological biomarkers linked to energy intake regulation and to understand how these responses vary by metabolic state and weight status. The project aims to assess neural, physiological, and hormonal responses within subjects under different states and compare profiles between normal-weight and obese individuals. It also provides training opportunities for undergraduates at a Minority-Serving Institution.
