Research project funded by NIAAA to study mechanisms of alcohol-induced brain injury and develop targeted neuroprotective interventions using advanced molecular and cellular techniques.
Description
This project aims to elucidate the brain region- and cell-specific mechanisms underlying alcohol-induced developmental neurotoxicity (AIDN) and develop cell-specific precision interventions. It employs multidisciplinary approaches such as virus-based gene modification, spatial transcriptomics, advanced imaging, and behavioral tests, using models including human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mini brains and mouse models. The research will provide strategies for early, brain cell type-targeted treatments for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and potentially other neurodevelopmental disorders.
