This NIH grant funds research on human 3D neuro-muscular assembloids to investigate cell tropism and host factor utilization by neuropathogenic enteroviruses, aiming to understand infection mechanisms and host interactions.

Description

Enteroviruses are ubiquitous pathogens causing diseases such as respiratory illness, hand foot and mouth disease, myocarditis, and acute flaccid myelitis. This project aims to study the role of host factors in neural tissue cell lines, discover novel host factors through genome-scale genetic screens, and analyze infection effects on neural-muscular circuits using organoid models.
