Description
The project aims to determine if estrogen protects or damages corneal endothelial cells, which could lead to new therapies for Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy (FECD). FECD involves loss of endothelial cells, basement membrane deposits, and corneal edema, with dysfunctional mitochondria observed in specimens. Since two-thirds to three-quarters of FECD patients are postmenopausal women, estrogen's protective role is hypothesized. The study will use mouse models to assess endothelial function, mitochondrial activity, and oxidative stress, examining sex differences and effects of menopause. Results could inform treatments for FECD and other eye disorders.
