Award to ACATECHOL, INC. for developing advanced antibiofilm central venous catheters to prevent bloodstream infections, aiming to reduce infection rates by over 80% and improve patient outcomes.
Description
This project aims to develop a novel anti-infective central venous catheter (CVC) with durable biofilm repellency and prolonged antimicrobial activity to significantly reduce infection rates associated with central line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). The innovation involves creating a double-network scaffold with multiple anti-infective mechanisms, manufacturing prototype CVCs, demonstrating superior long-term biofilm reduction, and validating efficacy and safety in animal models. Expected outcomes include scalable manufacturing protocols, improved biofilm efficacy, and a greater than 80% reduction in infection rates, leading to regulatory approval and market entry. The project has the potential to save over 100,000 lives annually and reduce costs by over $12.5 billion.
