Research project funded by the National Institute on Aging to study gut microbiome aging and health in a non-human primate model, aiming to identify microbiome functional changes, social/environmental impacts, and markers of healthy aging.

Description

This project uses an unprecedented, prospective, longitudinal data set, in a non-human primate model to identify age-related changes in the gut microbiome’s functional capacities across the lifespan. The results will reveal social and environmental drivers of microbiome aging, as well as microbiome features that predict maturation, physical/behavioral aging, and mortality. The proposed research is relevant to human health because it will provide targets for gut microbiome interventions aimed at sustaining healthy aging and improving health for people with microbiome-related disease. The project is highly relevant to NIA's mission of understanding processes that contribute to health and well being across the life span.
