Description

This project addresses a critical gap in personal exposure monitoring of airborne particulate matter, particularly ultrafine particles (~1000 times smaller than width of human hair), which are linked to respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological health effects. By developing a novel low-cost, field-deployable particle size estimation method using existing technology, the project supports improved exposure assessment in high-risk environments, including those impacted by strong emission sources, whether outdoors or within a household. In the long term, the technology can inform regulatory policy, environmental health interventions, and global efforts to reduce the disease burden associated with air pollution.
