A multi-year NIH research project led by the University of Arizona to test inspiratory muscle strength training as a method to reduce blood pressure and improve vascular function in older adults with sleep apnea.

Description

This project aims to establish the efficacy of inspiratory muscle strength training (IMST) as an intervention to reduce systolic blood pressure (SBP) in older adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Preliminary data suggest that 5 minutes of daily IMST over 6 weeks can lower resting SBP by approximately 12 mmHg. The study will evaluate the effects of IMST on blood pressure, vascular function, arterial stiffness, oxidative stress, and adherence in adults over 50 with elevated BP and OSA.
